Perihal "selfcare"
We have a family tradition where we check on each other’s day when everyone is at home from school and work...
So the other day Ayah asked me about my day and I told her that “I was on the couch most of the day” —doing couch related activities like reading, watching, tasbeehing, resting, napping, eating and eating some more ๐
So Mariam jumped in and said: “so you did nothing mama...”
Upon hearing those words I actually saw myself (in my head) rolling up my sleeves and I fixed my posture up lol I explained to her and her sisters this:
When you use your phone all day and then put it to charge; it’s “sitting there”; but can we say it’s “doing nothing?!”
They said: “ofcourse not...”
It’s actually doing the most important thing it can do in its day... if it doesn’t “charge” it won’t work, it will turn off, it won’t be of use, it will shut down...
Imagine you are running on the 1%?!
Running on low is not patience, sacrifice or hard work — it leads to destruction of self and others around us... we are better believers, better humans, better mothers, better wives, better activists, better advocates, better anything when we are feeling BETTER...
Our wellbeing determines the results we achieve and how we relate and communicate with everyone and everything around us...
You don’t need permission from anyone to take a break, pause or rest... you don’t need to feel guilty or even explain why you’re having a couch hour, couch day, couch month... because that’s your haqq (right)...
I explained to my girls not to defend my actions or to justify “my laziness”; I explained to them so that they understand how important this is for THEM to do in their lives too in their becoming of the young women they are... they need to know that resting is not “nothing”...
Charging through rest is compulsory to do because it has a direct impact on our relationship with Allah (swt); the purpose of our creation is to worship Him and the good we are meant to do on this earth... and neither can be done if we operate from the 1% or entirely shut down...
Self-care is different for everyone; it’s definitely not the manicures and shopping for me... when I think of self-care my top areas are spiritual health (my soul’s connection to Allah and looking inwards as this determines everything else) as well as my emotional, mental and physical wellbeing...
You need to know and do what you need to recharge and recover!
And since you read this post till the end; and it’s Friday so ุตูู ุนูู ุงููุจู (send salawat on the prophet ๏ทบ)
